Littleton, Historical town in Grafton County, New Hampshire
Littleton is a town in Grafton County, New Hampshire, situated on both sides of the Ammonoosuc River at an elevation of about 250 meters. The downtown core runs along Main Street, where shops and buildings create the commercial and social center of the community.
The area was originally granted as Chiswick in 1764 and later renamed in honor of Colonel Moses Little before becoming an incorporated town in 1784. This official establishment marked its transition from a simple settlement to a recognized municipal entity.
The Littleton Historical Museum displays objects and documents showing how the town evolved from a rural farming settlement into a modern community. Visitors can explore how local heritage shaped the lives of residents and continues to influence the area today.
The town has police and fire departments located on West Main Street providing emergency services to the area. Visitors find the downtown easy to explore on foot, with key attractions and amenities concentrated around Main Street and walkable neighborhoods.
The local Water and Light Company operating from Lafayette Avenue maintains independent utility services, setting this town apart from many other New Hampshire communities. This local control over essential infrastructure remains uncommon in the region and reflects the town's independent character.
