Moore Reservoir, lake in New Hampshire and Vermont
Moore Reservoir is a large artificial lake near Littleton in New Hampshire, created by damming the Connecticut River and spanning several miles with varying depths. The body of water features multiple access points along its shoreline for recreation and provides habitat for various fish species and wildlife.
The dam was completed in 1956 to create this reservoir as a hydroelectric power source for the region. Two towns were relocated and submerged during the construction of the project to make way for the water storage area.
The reservoir has several designated access points including Dodge Hill Picnic Area for easy entry to the water and ice. Visitors should check ice conditions before winter activities and exercise caution at the edges where water can remain unfrozen around the ice perimeter.
Two towns were submerged beneath the water when the dam was built, and old stone walls from these vanished communities still rise from the lake bottom and shoreline today. These remnants serve as hidden reminders of the landscape that existed before the reservoir was created.
