The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum combines a Victorian-style building with black walnut walls, arched skylights, and a collection of American and European paintings.
Horace Fairbanks, a platform scale manufacturer, established the Athenaeum in 1871 with an initial collection of 8,000 books selected by bibliographer William Poole.
The art gallery displays works by Hudson River School painters, including Asher B. Durand and Albert Bierstadt, alongside reproductions of European masterpieces.
The institution operates Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 5 PM and Saturday from 10 AM to 3 PM, with free admission for St. Johnsbury residents.
The centerpiece of the art collection features Albert Bierstadt's massive painting 'The Domes of Yosemite,' measuring ten by fifteen feet.
