Holy Trinity Cathedral, Eastern Orthodox cathedral in Ukrainian Village, Chicago, United States

Holy Trinity Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox church in Chicago's Ukrainian Village neighborhood, built in a style that mixes Russian provincial forms with western Gothic touches. It faces a quiet street with an octagonal dome and a front bell tower, while inside there are painted icons, decorated woodwork, and no fixed pews.

The church was finished in 1903 with money from Russian Tsar Saint Nicholas II and a fee donation from its architect, Louis Sullivan. It was first blessed by Saint Tikhon of Moscow and later raised to cathedral status in 1923 as the community grew.

The three-bar crosses on the roof peaks and the iconostasis inside show Orthodox traditions that many parishioners brought from rural villages in Carpathian Rus’ and the Balkans. During services, worshippers stand, move around, and kiss icons, giving the space a lived-in, communal rhythm that visitors can witness.

Visitors can enter quietly as long as a service is not in progress, and wearing respectful clothing helps since this is an active place of prayer. Because the interior has no permanent seats, it is easy to move around and observe the icons and woodwork at a comfortable pace.

This is the only house of worship designed by Louis Sullivan that still stands, since a second church he planned no longer exists. The chandelier by Healy & Millet was part of the original gift, adding a warm glow that many first-time visitors do not expect from such a small building.
