Wicker Park District, Historic district in West Town, Chicago, US
The district extends between Bell Avenue, Caton Street, Leavitt Street, Potomac Avenue, and the Chicago elevated train tracks in West Chicago.
Charles and Joel Wicker purchased the land in 1870 and developed a subdivision that included a 4-acre park, establishing the foundation of the neighborhood.
The area transformed from German and Scandinavian settlements to Polish communities, earning the nickname Polish Gold Coast in the early 20th century.
The district contains numerous Victorian-era residences, particularly along Pierce and Hoyne streets, which exhibit detailed architectural features from 1870 to 1930.
Hoyne Street earned the name Beer Baron Row due to the numerous brewery owners who constructed substantial mansions along this thoroughfare.
