Northwest Tower, Historic Art Deco building in Wicker Park, Chicago.
The Northwest Tower is a 12-story Art Deco building at the intersection of North Avenue and Milwaukee Avenue, its triangular shape created by the converging streets. The structure features classic design elements from the 1920s that remain intact alongside modern amenities added during recent renovations.
The building was constructed between 1928 and 1929 by architects Perkins, Chatten & Hammond and represented the first skyscraper built outside Chicago's downtown district. This development marked a shift in how the city was expanding beyond its traditional core.
The building housed Tower Coyote Gallery in the 1980s, becoming central to the annual neighborhood arts festival known as Around the Coyote. The artist-run space shaped the neighborhood's creative identity during that era.
The building now operates as The Robey Hotel with 69 rooms and Cafe Robey serving French-American cuisine. An additional rooftop pool located in the adjacent converted warehouse provides guests with an outdoor space.
The hotel maintains portions of the original lobby and preserves architectural details from the past. Visitors can discover period features that have survived and reflect the building's early grandeur.
