Lake Houston, Water reservoir in northeast Houston, Texas, US
Lake Houston extends across 11,854 acres with multiple inlets from the San Jacinto River, reaching depths of 45 feet at its deepest points.
The City of Houston initiated construction of the reservoir in 1951, completing the dam structure in 1953 to replace Sheldon Lake as the primary water source.
The reservoir brings together residents from Kingwood, Atascocita, Humble, and Crosby communities for fishing, boating, and water-based recreational activities.
Two tainter gates measuring 18 by 20.5 feet control water release between the earthfill section and spillway, maintaining water levels for municipal supply.
The drainage basin covers 2,828 square miles, with 445 square miles regulated by Conroe Dam, supporting both water management and ecological preservation.
