W.W. Thorne Stadium, Athletic stadium in Houston, United States
W.W. Thorne Stadium is an outdoor football and athletics stadium in Houston, Texas, with artificial turf, a video scoreboard, and seating built into earthen berms. Four entrance gates, one at each corner of the grounds, allow spectators to enter from all sides.
The stadium opened in 1979 after a structural failure at the previous Aldine Athletic Stadium prompted the district to build a new facility. That event moved forward plans that might otherwise have taken much longer to complete.
The stadium is home to several high school football teams from the Aldine Independent School District. On game days, the grass berms fill with families and neighbors cheering for their school teams.
The stadium sits close to George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which makes it easy to locate in the area. Since the four gates are spread around the perimeter, there is rarely a long walk from any entrance to your seat.
The stadium connects directly to the neighboring M.O. Campbell Center, which houses air-conditioned locker rooms, training rooms, and a conference room. This link makes the complex a place used throughout the week, not only on game days.
