Fort Oglethorpe, Military city in Georgia, United States.

Fort Oglethorpe is a city spanning Catoosa and Walker Counties, located about 9 miles south of Chattanooga. The Chickamauga National Military Park forms its southern boundary, with walking trails and open grounds that cover much of that area.

The U.S. Army established the original post in 1902 as a cavalry training ground and named it after James Oglethorpe, who founded Georgia as a colony. Following World War II, the military installation transitioned to civilian governance in 1949, marking the first city incorporation in Georgia after the war.

The fort transformed from a military installation to a civilian municipality in 1949, becoming the first city incorporated in Georgia after World War II.

The city is divided between two school districts due to its location across two counties, which affects local services and administration. Visitors should keep this in mind when exploring different parts of the city, as facilities and utilities may be managed separately.

During World War II, the location operated as a major training hub for the Women's Army Corps, processing thousands of military recruits. This role made it a significant center for female soldier training during the war years.
