Walker County encompasses 447 square miles of land with rolling hills, forests, and water bodies across the northwestern section of Georgia State.
The Georgia General Assembly established Walker County on December 18, 1833, from territory formerly belonging to the Cherokee Indian Nation.
The county maintains strong ties to Civil War history through the Chickamauga Campaign sites, including the Second Battle of Chattanooga and Battle of Davis's Cross Roads.
The county government transitioned from a sole commissioner structure to a five-member board of commissioners in January 2021, improving regional representation.
The Tri-State Crematory incident of 2002 revealed 339 unprocessed bodies on a property in Noble, leading to criminal charges and national media coverage.
