Ringgold Gap Battlefield
Ringgold Gap Battlefield, Civil War battlefield in Ringgold, United States.
Description
Ringgold Gap Battlefield spreads across a mountain pass between White Oak Mountain and Taylor Ridge, where troops established defensive lines and artillery positions. The terrain still reflects the natural geography that gave one side advantages while challenging the other.
History
A major battle occurred here on November 27, 1863, between Union and Confederate forces that influenced the advance toward Atlanta. The outcome of this clash affected control over Georgia territory during the larger conflict.
Culture
Monuments and bronze plaques scattered across the grounds honor soldiers from both armies who fought here. These markers tell the stories of the officers and troops whose decisions and actions shaped the battle's outcome.
Practical
The site is accessible from U.S. Route 41 and features a roadside park with interpretive markers at key locations. Visitors can walk through the area and follow the markers to understand how troops positioned themselves across the landscape.

The nearby Western and Atlantic Railroad Depot still shows marks and damage from artillery fire during the fighting. These structures offer rare evidence of the intense struggle over the transportation routes that armies needed to control.
