The Jones Observatory houses a 20.5-inch Cassegrain reflector telescope, enabling detailed observations of celestial objects from its Tennessee location.
The observatory, completed in 1936 during the Federal Emergency Administration of Public Works program, opened its doors to the public in 1938.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga maintains this facility, providing astronomical education programs and research opportunities for students and local residents.
Between October and April, the observatory schedules multiple public viewing nights where visitors can examine stars, planets, and other celestial phenomena.
The primary mirror of the observatory's telescope served as a research model for Corning Incorporated's development of the 200-inch Hale Telescope.
