Southern Railway 4501, Steam locomotive at Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga, United States.
Southern Railway 4501 is a Mikado class 2-8-2 steam locomotive displayed at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum in Chattanooga. The engine has a black boiler and frame with green trim and sits on tracks alongside other preserved railroad equipment.
Baldwin Locomotive Works built this engine in 1911 as the first Ms class locomotive for Southern Railway. It hauled freight trains until diesels replaced steam operations in the 1950s.
The locomotive operates during special events at Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, pulling passenger cars through Missionary Ridge Tunnel and across four bridges.
The museum opens Wednesday through Sunday and visitors can view the locomotive during guided tours or from outdoor viewing areas. On select days throughout the year the engine pulls passenger cars on special excursions through the surrounding hills.
The locomotive appeared in several films wearing different railroad names and numbers. During filming crews applied temporary paint schemes and lettering from other railroad companies.
