Northern Michigan, Geographic region in Michigan, United States

Northern Michigan covers both peninsulas of the state, with dense forests, countless lakes, and gentle hills shaped by ancient ice sheets. Much of the territory borders the Great Lakes directly, while the interior holds thick stands of conifers and hardwoods.

Logging camps appeared from the mid-1800s onward and turned vast stretches of original forest into towns and farmland. After the timber industry declined, the forest slowly regrew and the area shifted toward recreation.

The Anishinaabe peoples gave names to the landscape that still appear on maps, rivers, and towns today. These place names reflect the original inhabitants and their relationship with nature.

Winter snow can make many roads impassable, so planning for colder weather is important. From spring through fall, most routes open up and lakes become ready for swimming and boating.

More than 11,000 lakes lie within its borders and connect to four of the five Great Lakes. This abundance of water shapes a vast network that influences climate and way of life across the entire territory.
