Edward E. Hartwick Memorial Building, Heritage museum in Grayling Township, Michigan.
The Edward E. Hartwick Memorial Building is a rustic log structure in Hartwick Pines State Park built entirely from Michigan pine timber. The interior features a high cathedral ceiling, large fieldstone fireplace, and an open mezzanine on the second floor.
Karen Hartwick donated the land in 1927 and commissioned the building in 1929 to honor her husband Major Edward Hartwick, who died in World War I. Construction was completed in 1933 by Civilian Conservation Corps workers.
The building displays early park architecture with rustic craftsmanship and heavy timber posts that define the interior space. Visitors can see how parks were designed and built during this era.
Access is through Hartwick Pines State Park, so plan to arrive early and wear appropriate walking shoes. The grounds are most accessible during warmer months.
The building's completion was heavily delayed by the Great Depression, pausing work for several years before resuming. This interruption shaped how the project was ultimately finished and rebuilt.
