Elkhart Lake, village in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin

Elkhart Lake is a small village in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, centered around a clear, spring-fed lake that reaches depths of about 119 feet (36 meters). The water often gleams bright blue, and the surrounding area features restaurants, shops, and beaches within easy walking or biking distance.

The lake was formed by glacier movement long ago and received its name from the Potawatomi people. German settlers arrived in the late 1800s and developed the land for farming, while visitors later traveled by stagecoach and train, drawn to lakeside resorts and outdoor recreation.

The village takes its name from the Potawatomi people, who called the water Great Heart Lake because its shape resembles an elk's heart. Visitors experience today the welcoming spirit that has defined this place since its earliest days, reflected in how locals engage with the community and preserve its heritage.

The village is small and easy to walk through, with most facilities within short distances of each other. Activities are possible year-round: summers are good for swimming, fall for hiking, and winter for ice skating and snow sports.

Despite its small size, the village sits about one hour from Milwaukee, Green Bay, and Madison, and less than three hours from Chicago, making it an easy destination for day trips or longer stays. This proximity to larger cities allows visitors to experience a quiet rural setting without traveling far.
