Provin Mountain, Summit of Metacomet Ridge in Massachusetts, United States
Provin Mountain is a summit of Metacomet Ridge in Massachusetts, a narrow traprock mountain ridge extending about 5 miles with steep cliffs. The rock face rises between 200 and 450 feet above the Connecticut River Valley.
This mountain formed during the Triassic Period when the North American continent separated from Africa and Eurasia through volcanic activity. The resulting igneous rock created the traprock formation visible today.
The peak once housed the original broadcasting studios of WWLP television station, serving as a hub for regional media from the mid-twentieth century onward.
Multiple trails provide access for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing throughout the year. Visitors may observe migrating raptors from the peak depending on the season they choose to visit.
Natural underground reservoirs within the mountain supply drinking water to the city of Springfield through a network of hidden storage systems. This concealed water infrastructure demonstrates how the mountain's geology serves the region's practical needs.
