Bostick Female Academy
Bostick Female Academy, Private academy in College Grove, United States
Bostick Female Academy is a Victorian school building in College Grove featuring an L-shaped design with ornate structural details. The structure sits on extensive grounds and displays characteristic architectural elements typical of its era.
Jonathan Bostick, a wealthy planter, funded the establishment of this academy in 1892 following the destruction of Porter Female Academy during the Civil War. The new building rose as a replacement for the lost educational institution for girls.
The academy provided education for girls when few schools in Tennessee accepted female students during the late 1800s. It stood as a symbol of changing attitudes toward women's learning and opportunity in the region.
The building sits in a quiet rural area near College Grove on an expansive lot that can be viewed from the road. Access is best during daylight hours since it now functions as a private residence and can only be appreciated from the exterior.
The building earned recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, securing its status as an important historical landmark. This designation highlights its significance to both local and national history.
