Cary Library, Carnegie library in Houlton, United States.

Cary Library is a public library featuring Colonial Revival architecture constructed from granite in Houlton. The T-shaped building displays a steeply pitched slate roof and features prominent stone details across its main facade, with rows of tall windows along the sides.

Medical doctor and state legislator George Cary provided the main gift to establish the library, while Andrew Carnegie donated funds in 1903. These contributions enabled the construction of an important educational building for the local community.

The library preserves the original design vision of architect John Calvin Stevens and reflects how Maine communities prioritized education in the early 1900s. Visitors can see how this building continues to serve as a gathering place for learning and community activities.

The building sits on Main Street and remains easily accessible to visitors of all ages. You will find quiet areas for reading and research, plus regular community events held throughout the year.

The building features granite sills and lintels above rows of windows, with cornices decorated by detailed dentil stonework. These intricate stone details reveal the craftsmanship invested in every part of the structure.
