Charlotte Hall Historic District, historic district in Maryland, United States
Charlotte Hall Historic District is a small area in Maryland containing thirteen historic buildings and sites arranged along an old road. The structures display various architectural styles from different periods, including Colonial Revival, Gothic, and Federal designs that reflect changes across centuries.
The area developed around a school founded in the late 1700s that served the community for centuries. The school campus expanded with a military program around 1852, the institution closed in 1976, and the site was taken over by the Maryland Veterans Home shortly after.
The district takes its name from Charlotte Hall School, a late 1700s institution that shaped local life and served as a community anchor for generations. Walking here, you see how education and village life were woven together in the architecture and layout of this small Maryland town.
The district is best explored on foot along Old Route 5, with quiet streets and trees that make for a pleasant walk. Buildings are visible from outside, and nearby historical sites such as Sotterly Plantation and St. Mary's City offer additional stops for visitors.
Archaeological digs between 1981 and 1989 uncovered building remains including bricks and debris from different fires and rebuilds across centuries. These finds reveal that the school grounds held more than just educational structures, with evidence of on-site brick-making and possible old farm buildings like a tobacco barn.
