Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary, Nature preserve in Calvert County, Maryland.
Battle Creek Cypress Swamp Sanctuary is a nature preserve with roughly 100 acres of wetland dominated by bald cypress trees. An elevated boardwalk about a quarter mile long guides visitors through the swamp environment for closer observation.
The Nature Conservancy established the preserve as its first sanctuary in Maryland in 1957. It earned National Natural Landmark status in 1965.
The visitor center displays information about local plants and animals through exhibitions. People come here to learn why swamps are important for nature and the region.
The property sits in Prince Frederick and is easily accessible by car. Larger groups should book in advance if they want to join a guided tour.
The preserve contains the northernmost naturally occurring population of bald cypress trees in North America. These trees mark a geographical boundary for the species and show how nature adapts to local conditions.
