Christ Church Burial Ground, Colonial cemetery in Center City, Philadelphia, United States.
Christ Church Burial Ground is a colonial-era cemetery in Center City, Philadelphia. It covers roughly two acres and holds about 1,400 marked graves enclosed by an 18th-century brick wall at Fifth and Arch Streets.
The cemetery opened in 1719 when Christ Church required additional burial space. Benjamin Franklin and four other signers of the Declaration of Independence were laid to rest here.
The burial ground contains graves of physicians, military officers, and civic leaders who shaped early American society through their contributions to medicine and governance.
The cemetery is open to visitors from March through November. Guests can walk through the grounds and view the gravestones up close, with guided tours offering more context.
Visitors often toss coins through the iron rails onto Benjamin Franklin's grave in reference to his famous saying about saving money. The coins pile up at the base of the marker and are later collected for charity.
