Cunningham Park, Public park in Queens, US
Cunningham Park is a large green space in eastern Queens, New York, made up of forests, open fields, and a wide range of sports facilities including tennis courts, baseball diamonds, and a running track. A pedestrian overpass connects its two main sections, which are separated by an expressway that runs through the middle.
The site opened in 1928 under the name Hillside Park, then was renamed in 1935 to honor Andrew Cunningham, a former New York City finance official. Over the following decades the grounds were gradually developed with more facilities as the surrounding neighborhoods of Queens grew.
The park draws families and groups from across Queens, especially on weekends when people gather on the open fields for picnics and informal sports. Some areas host organized tournaments and community events that bring together people from many different neighborhoods.
The park has several entrances and parking areas, making it easy to reach by car, and local bus lines also stop nearby. Because the two sections are split by a highway, it helps to check in advance which side has the facilities you are looking for.
The park contains one of the few marked mountain biking trail networks found within New York City limits, drawing regular riders from across the borough. Many first-time visitors are surprised to find this kind of off-road cycling in the middle of a densely built urban area.
