Crompton Mill Historic District, Industrial historic district in West Warwick, United States.
The Crompton Mill Historic District is an industrial complex in West Warwick comprising multiple red brick structures built over nearly two centuries on about 5 acres alongside the South Branch of the Pawtuxet River. The site includes both standing buildings and foundation remains from structures lost in a 1992 fire.
The Providence Manufacturing Company established textile operations here in 1807, and the mills continued under various operators until production ended in 1946. This location played a central role in New England's industrial development for nearly 140 years.
The complex shows how textile factories shaped the local landscape and work habits across generations. Red brick buildings and their arrangement reveal how industrial communities organized production and daily life along the river.
The district is bounded by Pulaski, Remington, and Manchester Streets and is best explored on foot to see both standing structures and archaeological remains. Wear sturdy shoes as some areas have uneven ground and debris from past damage.
Mill No. 1, built in 1807, is Rhode Island's oldest surviving stone mill building and still preserves the original water raceways from its founding period. These early features show how water power drove the factory operations at this location.
