David Brown House, Historic site in Rising Sun, Indiana, US
The David Brown House is a two-story log structure built from hand-hewn yellow poplar wood, sitting on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River. The building displays early American frontier construction methods, with its original blockhouse design and stone foundation beneath.
The house was built around 1825 by David Brown, a Revolutionary War veteran, using traditional blockhouse construction techniques. It was added to the Indiana Register in 1978, marking its recognition as a significant structure from the early settlement period.
The house structure represents early American frontier architecture with its two-room design measuring 17 feet by 20 feet and field stone cellar beneath.
The site sits on the northern side of Rising Sun, positioned between several geographical landmarks in the region. Visitors should allow time to examine the restored structure and its later additions while exploring the surrounding area.
Restoration work began in 1971 when workers discovered the original log structure had survived intact beneath exterior siding applied over the years. This finding allowed the authentic construction to be preserved and carefully restored to its early form.
