Hillforest, Renaissance Revival mansion in Aurora, Indiana
Hillforest is a mansion with Italian Renaissance styling positioned on elevated ground above the Ohio River, featuring curved porches and circular windows throughout. A central belvedere crowns the top of the structure, creating a distinctive observation point at its highest level.
Scottish immigrant Thomas Gaff, who founded a distillery business, commissioned architect Isaiah Rogers to build this house starting in 1855. Its construction marked his rise to prominence and wealth in the river trading community.
The residence reflects the taste of successful industrialists from the 1800s who combined Italian Renaissance style with river navigation themes. The architectural choices show how wealthy business owners displayed their connection to the Ohio River and their commercial enterprises.
The house is open to visitors through guided tours offered seasonally from spring through winter each year. Plan your visit in advance since tour availability depends on the season and group sizes may vary.
The building incorporates design features found in riverboats, including curved windows and doors that echo the construction methods of Ohio River steamships. This maritime connection reveals Gaff's personal passion for the river culture of his era.
