Metalab, Collaborative workspace in central Vienna, Austria
Metalab is a shared workspace in central Vienna, organized into areas for workshops, an electronics lab, a photography studio, and open desks. Members have access to laser cutters, 3D printers, CNC machines, measuring devices, and computer stations throughout the space.
Metalab was founded in 2006 by people inspired by Berlin's Chaos Computer Club, with the goal of building a technology community space in Austria's capital. Over time, it grew into one of the most recognized hackerspaces in the German-speaking world.
People with different skills come here to work together on projects in electronics, digital art, and programming. The space works as a meeting point for anyone who wants to experiment with technology or share ideas with others.
Access is mainly for members, but public events are held on a regular basis and welcome anyone. Checking the website or reaching out in advance is a good way to find out about visiting options and current opening hours.
An original Austrian telephone booth stands in the main room, kept as a reminder of an earlier era of communication. Seeing it next to modern machines makes the contrast between old and new technology immediately visible.
