Marokkanerkaserne, Military barracks in Landstraße district, Vienna, Austria
The Marokkanerkaserne is a military facility in Vienna's Landstraße district with distinctive features including a polygonal corner tower and stepped portal frames on its facade. The elongated building is articulated by cornices that give it a structured and recognizable appearance.
The barracks was constructed in 1913 as a replacement for an earlier facility at Heumarkt and became operational for military purposes in Vienna. A decade later in 1921, a police training and response unit took over the complex and established its base there.
The barracks takes its name from an 18th-century friendship agreement between Morocco and Austria, a connection preserved in the street name of this neighborhood. This historical link surprises many visitors and ties the building to a lesser-known chapter of Vienna's diplomatic relations.
The facility now hosts a security academy from the Interior Ministry that provides basic and advanced training to federal police and administrative personnel. Access to the barracks is restricted for security reasons, so advance coordination is necessary to visit.
A Moroccan diplomat who signed a friendship treaty with Austria once resided on this street and opened a diplomatic mission nearby. This direct historical link between the building and diplomatic affairs is rarely remembered today.
