Beethovenplatz, Public square in Innere Stadt, Vienna, Austria
Beethovenplatz is a public square in Vienna's first district, Innere Stadt, with grassy areas, pathways, and benches. It sits next to the Academic Gymnasium and is close to the Stadtpark.
The square took shape after Vienna's medieval walls were torn down between 1857 and 1864, when the city began building the grand ring road and its surrounding structures. The neighboring Academic Gymnasium building was designed during this same period by Friedrich Schmidt.
A bronze statue of Ludwig van Beethoven, made by Kaspar von Zumbusch in 1880, stands at the center of the square. Music lovers from around the world stop here to pay their respects to the composer.
The square is easy to reach on foot and sits near tram and subway stops. Visiting in the morning tends to be quieter and gives a clearer view of the monument and the surrounding green space.
The Beethoven monument was rotated 90 degrees in 1899 so that it now faces Lothringerstraße rather than its original orientation. This change was made so that the composer would be more visible from the street.
