Palace of Ludwig Viktor, City palace and theatre in Innere Stadt, Austria
The Palace of Ludwig Viktor sits at Schwarzenbergplatz 1, displaying tall arched windows framed by Corinthian columns and six stone statues of Austrian figures. Today it houses the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research, with offices occupying the basement and ground floor.
Built between 1863 and 1866 by architect Heinrich von Ferstel, the palace was commissioned for Archduke Ludwig Viktor, the younger brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The building took shape during a period of major urban transformation in Vienna and has defined the character of Schwarzenbergplatz ever since.
The Kasino am Schwarzenbergplatz functions as a performance space for Vienna's renowned Burgtheater. Visitors can experience theatrical productions here that shape the city's cultural life.
The building today houses a ministry and a theater, both accessible to visitors for scheduled performances and events. Check ahead about performances and access times, as entry depends on what is happening inside.
The monumental entrance hall contains nine domes and a double open stairway with marble balustrade, leading to a two-story festive hall. This elaborate interior design remains hidden from most visitors since these spaces are not typically open to the public.
