Glacial Aerial Tramway Kaprun III, Mountain funicular in Kaprun, Austria
The Glacial Aerial Tramway Kaprun III is a mountain cable car serving the Kitzsteinhorn area, climbing over 3000 meters above sea level across a span exceeding 2200 meters. This installation links mid-mountain stations with the glacier zone, functioning as the main transport for skiers and hikers reaching the high alpine terrain.
The tramway opened in 1966, making the glacier accessible to the public for the first time. Following a serious incident in 2000, the installation underwent comprehensive technical upgrades and safety improvements.
The funicular reflects Austrian engineering excellence in mountain transportation, enabling year-round access to winter sports and high-altitude activities in Salzburg region.
The tramway generally runs throughout the year, though autumn maintenance may cause brief closures. Warm clothing is recommended even in summer, as temperatures at the top are much lower than in the valley.
The upper station sits next to the summit platform and offers access to a viewing area that on clear days provides views reaching into Italy and Slovenia. Few visitors realize the cabins were specially designed to carry heavy equipment alongside passengers.
