Children's Hospital Glanzing

Children's Hospital Glanzing sits at Glanzinggasse 35-39 in Döbling and comprises three structures built in the early 20th century style. The neoclassical and functionalist elements shape its appearance and reflect typical Vienna medical architecture of that period.

The hospital opened in 1915 to reduce infant mortality in Vienna and provide specialized pediatric care to the city's families. Over the following decades it became an important facility before its departments were relocated to other sites starting in 1996.

The site reflects its past medical purpose through its architecture, even as residents now live within its walls. Visitors walking past can sense how the building bridges its historical role with its present-day residential function.

The site is now private residential property and not open to the public, though its exterior can be viewed from the street. The protected monument status indicates its architectural and historical importance to the neighborhood.

The facility pioneered neonatal medicine when it opened Austria's first intensive care unit for newborns in 1974. This medical breakthrough contributed significantly to improving infant survival rates in the country.
