Gigalitz, Mountain summit in Tyrol, Austria
Gigalitz is a mountain summit in the Zillertal Alps standing at 3,001 meters, positioned between the Floitengrund and Stillupgrund valleys along the Floitenkamm ridge. The peak can be reached via the standard hiking route or accessed through technical climbing sections on its southeastern edge.
The peak was first documented to have been climbed in 1884, establishing it as a recognized destination for alpine exploration in Austria. This early ascent marked the beginning of mountain climbing activity in this range.
The summit holds a metal orientation rose and a cross placed in 2006 by a group of local pub regulars who called themselves FND, referencing their Friday after-work gatherings. These markers reflect how the mountain has become part of the social fabric and recreation culture of nearby communities.
The main hiking route begins at Greizer Hut and ascends through Lapenscharte col to the summit, taking around 2.5 hours to complete. Sturdy footwear and caution during bad weather or snow cover are important for a safe visit.
The peak features the Gigalitzturm, a technical climbing route with seven rope lengths ascending roughly 300 meters up the southeastern face. This challenging alternative to the hiking route appeals to climbers seeking greater difficulty.
