Ahornspitze, Mountain summit in Zillertal Alps, Tyrol, Austria
Ahornspitze is a mountain summit in the Zillertal Alps in the Austrian state of Tyrol, sitting at roughly 2,970 feet (2,970 m). The peak rises clearly above the surrounding valleys and is marked by a summit cross that makes it easy to spot from a distance.
The mountain served as a landmark for communities in the surrounding valleys long before it became a destination for climbers in the 19th century. The construction of mountain huts in the area gradually made the ascent more accessible to a wider range of visitors.
The name Ahornspitze comes from the maple trees growing in the valleys below, following an old Tyrolean habit of naming peaks after the plants found nearby. At the summit cross, visitors often find a logbook where climbers leave a record of their ascent, a common tradition in the Alps.
The ascent typically starts from the valleys around the Zillertal, and the choice of starting point affects both the length and the difficulty of the route. Setting out early in the day is a good idea, as weather in high mountain areas can change quickly.
From the top, four separate valleys come into view at the same time, which is rare among the peaks in this part of the Alps. This position between so many valleys is part of what draws people back to this summit more than once.
