Berliner Hütte, Mountain hut in Mayrhofen, Austria
Berliner Hütte is an alpine lodge at 2042 meters in the Zillertal Alps, accommodating around 180 guests in private rooms and dormitories. The building functions as a base for hiking and mountain climbing in this mountain range.
Founded in 1879, the hut grew from a simple shelter into a substantial mountain lodge with expanded facilities. It became the first mountain refuge in Austria to receive monument protection status, underscoring its historical importance.
The name reflects a historical connection to Berlin and Prussian mountaineers who founded it as a meeting place. Today, visitors experience this heritage through the convivial atmosphere where climbers from different regions gather to share meals and stories.
The lodge is fully open during summer months with comfortable sleeping and dining facilities available. In colder months, a heated winter room with blankets provides basic shelter for visitors arriving outside the main season.
The building preserves rare historical technical systems, including a telephone setup from the 19th century and electric lighting installed in 1912. These original installations offer insight into how mountain shelters became modernized in the early 1900s.
