Wiener-Neustädter Hut, Mountain hut at Schneekar, Ehrwald, Austria.
The Wiener-Neustädter Hut is a mountain shelter at 2213 meters on the Tyrolean side of Zugspitze, providing about 30 beds across several rooms. The accommodation spreads across multiple buildings with sleeping quarters of different sizes for guests.
The shelter was founded in 1884 by the Austrian Tourist Club as an important stop for early climbers. Over the decades it was expanded several times to handle the growing number of visitors.
The hut preserves memories of mountaineering through old equipment and photographs displayed in its rooms. Visitors can see how alpine sports evolved by looking at what climbers once used.
You can reach the shelter from the valley on a marked trail in about 3 hours with roughly 1000 meters of elevation gain. It is important to be careful in bad weather and strong wind, as the paths are exposed and can quickly become difficult.
The shelter is known for staying open in winter, serving as a base for winter climbers and ski mountaineers. This winter operation allows expeditions during the cold months when most other huts are closed.
