Marienkirche, Baroque church building in Steyr, Austria.
The Marienkirche is a baroque building featuring two symmetrical towers, with a statue of the Virgin Mary above its main entrance portal. The structure includes a nave with several side chapels and adjoining spaces that shape the interior layout.
A Dominican monastery was founded at this location around 1478 with a simpler initial design. After fires and flooding destroyed parts of the building in the 16th century, it was substantially rebuilt in the mid-17th century to take on the baroque form we see today.
The name reflects the local veneration of the Virgin Mary, a figure of particular importance to this community. Walking inside, you encounter baroque forms and decorations that merge faith and craftsmanship in a single, cohesive experience.
The church is located at Stadtplatz 41 in central Steyr and is easy to reach from main streets. The adjoining area now hosts a post office, situated in sections of what was once the monastery complex.
Two side chapels with sculptures were created in 1650 under sculptor Elias Sturmberger and still frame the church forecourt today. These chapels contain religious statues and showcase the work of a significant local artisan whose influence appears elsewhere in Steyr's urban landscape.
