Rathaus Steyr

Rathaus Steyr is a Baroque administrative building featuring a distinctive onion dome and a light gray facade decorated with pilasters and six allegorical statues. The structure houses administrative offices and a city archive that remain in use today within its rooms.

Construction of the building took place from 1765 to 1778 based on designs by architect Johann Gotthard Hayberger, who also served as the city's mayor. His work reflected the Baroque style of the period and became a defining feature of the city's landscape.

Inside, you can see marble trim and decorative plasterwork in the council room that reflect the era's style, while the fire-breathing panther on the front represents the city's emblem.

The town hall sits at Stadtplatz and is easy to locate from the city center, though the administrative rooms are not always open to the public. Check ahead to learn which areas you can visit and when access is available.

The Austrian Post honored this architectural landmark in 1965 with an 8-schilling stamp featuring the building's distinctive design. This recognition highlights how central the structure became to the city's identity.
