Bummerlhaus

The Bummerlhaus is a Gothic mansion in Steyr featuring striking stone carvings that catch the eye on its first floor. The building displays a wide bay-like window with blind arcades and an elaborate frieze decorated with five irregularly arranged windows.

The oldest parts of the building reach back to the 13th century, with the first written record appearing in 1450. This early documentation makes it an important example of medieval architecture in Austria.

The name comes from the 19th century when locals called the Golden Lion inn sign a chubby little dog, and the house carries this affectionate nickname to this day. This tells the story of how ordinary people once saw the building and what it meant to their daily life.

The building currently houses a bank, so you can view the medieval architecture from outside or while visiting the counter area. Its location in the heart of Steyr makes it easy to reach on foot as you explore the town's historic buildings.

In 1973, the Austrian government honored this mansion by placing it on a 50 schilling coin to mark 500 years of its existence. This recognition reflects how important the building is considered to the nation's cultural heritage.
