Masnerkopf, Mountain summit in Samnaun Group, Austria
Masnerkopf is a mountain summit in the Samnaun Group standing at 2,828 meters (9,278 feet) in Tyrol. The peak sits between the Paznauntal and Oberinntal valleys with a distinctive pyramid-shaped silhouette.
The mountain was part of ancient trade routes connecting Austria and Switzerland through the Samnaun Alps. Shepherds and merchants traveled these passes for centuries, making it an important crossing in alpine commerce.
Local mountaineering traditions include annual summer gatherings at the Hexenseehütte, where climbers share experiences and technical knowledge about alpine ascents.
Climbing the summit requires technical alpine skills rated UIAA grade I with the Hexenseehütte serving as the main base hut at 2,558 meters (8,393 feet). This mountain refuge provides lodging and is the logical starting point for the ascent.
The mountain displays interesting rock formations including mica-rich slate gneiss and pegmatite veins, particularly visible along the northwestern climbing route. These striking stone patterns formed through alpine geological processes and give the route distinctive visual character.
