Sulztalferner, Alpine glacier in Tyrol, Austria.
Sulztalferner is a glacier in the Tyrolean Alps situated at roughly 2,900 meters elevation. The ice field is surrounded by steep rock walls and displays deep crevasses with jagged seracs rising from the white surface.
This glacier formed during the ice ages and once covered a much larger area in this mountain region. Since the mid-20th century, the ice mass has been shrinking noticeably as Alpine temperatures have risen.
The glacier serves as a central point for Alpine research expeditions, where scientists examine ice cores to understand climate patterns and geological changes.
This location is best reached via a longer mountain hike starting from one of the nearby mountain huts. Anyone visiting the glacier should go with experienced mountain guides and bring proper equipment such as crampons.
Special algae species grow on the ice surface, giving it a greenish tint and thriving only under extreme conditions. These microorganisms show how diverse life can be even in such frozen landscapes.
