Großer Mühldorfer See, reservoir in Carinthia
The Großer Mühldorfer See is a reservoir in the Austrian Alps held back by a concrete dam, covering about 24 hectares of water surface when full. The lake sits at an elevation above 2300 meters and is fed by the Mühldorfer Bach.
Originally a natural mountain lake, it was transformed into a reservoir between 1954 and 1957 by building a concrete dam to store water for electricity generation. Since its completion, the lake has been part of the Reißeck power plant system and was drained in 2013 for dam renovation work.
The lake can be reached on foot or by bicycle via hiking trails, with paths leading around the water's edge. The Reißeckhütte mountain hut near the dam provides food and shelter for visitors.
A striking feature is the walkable dam extending over 400 meters, from which visitors can look out over the lake and surrounding mountain peaks. In 1994, an opera performance was even held on this dam surface with the mountain landscape as a natural backdrop.
