Tir national, Military training complex in Schaerbeek, Belgium
Tir national was a shooting range in Schaerbeek featuring multiple training facilities for long-distance practice. The 20-hectare complex accommodated both indoor and outdoor sessions until operations ceased in 1963.
The facility opened in 1889 and served as a military training ground for Belgium. During World Wars I and II, German occupation forces used the grounds as an execution site for resistance fighters and civilians.
The site reflects Belgium's military past through its original design and purpose. Today, memorials throughout the grounds mark its significance and shape how visitors experience the location.
The former shooting range grounds now host Belgian broadcasters RTBF and VRT. Several areas remain accessible to visitors who wish to explore memorials and historical markers on site.
A cemetery called Enclos des fusillés holds 365 graves of those executed on the grounds. A memorial monument within it preserves remains of prisoners from concentration camps between 1940 and 1945.
