Justus Lipsiuscollege, Educational institution and protected monument in Leuven, Belgium
Justus Lipsiuscollege is an educational institution and protected monument in Leuven with a U-shaped brick structure, steep slate roofs, and a central garden beside the Dijle river. The building consists of three wings that house student dormitories, dining facilities, and classrooms.
The college was founded in 1879 and stands on the site of a former Ursuline convent from 1659. Architect Joris Helleputte led the complete renovation, carefully preserving the historical character while adapting it for educational use.
The college takes its name from the humanist Justus Lipsius, reflecting the scholarly traditions that shaped the institution. Walking through the grounds, you can sense the connection to this intellectual heritage.
The site is located beside the Dijle river and is easily accessible on foot near Leuven's city center. The best time to visit is outside examination periods when the campus is less crowded.
The grounds contain remains from Leuven's earliest defensive fortifications dating to the 12th century, including the Justus Lipsius tower along the Kleine Dijle. These archaeological features reveal the city's early protective structures.
