St Joseph College, Aalst, Catholic secondary school in Aalst, Belgium
St Joseph College is a protected school complex on Pontstraat in Aalst, combining a baroque church building with classrooms and other educational spaces. The site is made up of several buildings from different periods, added over the centuries as the school grew.
The Jesuits founded the school in 1622 on Pontstraat, making it one of the oldest educational institutions in the region. Over the centuries, the school changed hands several times but remained a center for Catholic secondary education in Aalst.
The school takes its name from Saint Joseph and has long been part of how the city thinks about education and faith. Visitors walking past the baroque church front can still see how religious life and daily learning were once closely tied together here.
The complex is centrally located in Aalst and easy to reach on foot from the city center. Since it is an active school, access is limited to the exterior, so the best way to see it is from the street, where the baroque church front is clearly visible.
Although the school has existed for more than 400 years, the baroque church facade was only officially listed as a protected monument in 1997, long after the building was put up. This means the protection covers the facade specifically, which is the part that still shapes the look of Pontstraat today.
