Urbis Complex, Multifunctional retail complex in Zuid district, Ghent, Belgium.
The Urbis Complex occupies an entire city block between Woodrow Wilsonplein, Kuiperskaai, and Oudescheldestraat, housing retail spaces, apartments, and office areas in one integrated structure. This multifunctional building merges distinct urban functions within a single architectural framework that shapes the surrounding streetscape.
Construction began in 1991 on the former Muinkmeersen land where the Muinkschelde and Oude Schelde rivers once converged. This development transformed an industrial riverside site into a modern multifunctional area for the expanding city.
The provincial administration of East Flanders operates within this complex, anchoring it as a key location for governmental functions in the city. Visitors can observe how commercial shops, residential units, and administrative offices blend together, making the space a genuine city hub.
Underground parking is available within the complex and connects directly to the public transportation network at Woodrow Wilsonplein station. Visitors arriving by public transit or car will find convenient access to the site.
Architect Dirk Bontinck designed the structure to integrate commercial, residential, and administrative functions on a former riverbed site. This mixed-use concept represented an innovative approach to urban renewal when completed.
