Houtain-le-Val Castle

Houtain-le-Val Castle is a fortified residence built on elevated terrain with roots in medieval times and later renewed in the 1800s. The stone structure shows features from both periods, including two smaller towers added during restoration work.

A military fortification was first built here in 1129 under Walter de Holton, who became the original lord of the area. The property underwent major renovation in the 1800s that shaped its current appearance.

The castle defines the skyline of Houtain-le-Val village and shows how building styles evolved over time. Both locals and visitors can see the different construction phases visible in the structure itself.

The castle sits on a hilltop in Walloon Brabant and is best explored on foot around the exterior. Wear suitable shoes as the grounds are uneven and access points can be steep.

The building has long been private property of the Comte de Moerkerke family and remains closely tied to Belgian nobility heritage. This link between private ownership and historical legacy makes it a rare example of preserved aristocratic residences in the region.
