Nivelles Abbey, Monastery in Nivelles, Belgium
Nivelles Abbey is a former monastery in Nivelles, Belgium, centered on the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Saint Gertrude, one of the oldest standing churches in the country. The complex includes the church itself, underground passages, and exposed stone foundations that show how the site grew and changed over the centuries.
The monastery was founded in the 7th century as a double house where monks and nuns lived separately under a shared leadership. Over the following centuries it was rebuilt and expanded several times, taking on the Romanesque form that still defines most of what stands today.
The collegiate church became a destination for pilgrims who came to venerate Saint Gertrude, whose relics are still kept here. Visitors today can see the shrine and the spaces where generations of worshippers gathered around it.
The complex is open to walk through, and the underground areas are accessible to most visitors, though the floors can be uneven in places. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as some sections are narrow or poorly lit.
The church was almost entirely rebuilt after World War II, having been heavily damaged by incendiary bombs in 1940. The reconstruction took several decades and followed the medieval original closely, so many visitors have no idea how recent much of the stonework actually is.
