Keren, city in Eritrea
Keren is a large city located in the Keren Subregion of Eritrea's highlands. The city spreads across hilly terrain and mixes colonial-era buildings with contemporary structures, featuring narrow alleyways alongside broader avenues.
The city was founded during the Italian colonial period in the late 1800s and developed as a key administrative and trading center. It played an important role during the independence war and was rebuilt afterwards.
The best way to explore the city is on foot, as many areas are closely connected. Bring water and wear appropriate clothing for the highland climate, as temperatures can be warm during the day but cool in the evening.
