Asmara Cinema-Teatro

The Asmara Cinema-Teatro is an opera house and theater in Eritrea's capital featuring a monumental staircase entrance, a shell-shaped fountain, and a Renaissance-style loggia decorated with Corinthian columns on the exterior. Inside, the auditorium seats around 750 spectators across a ground floor and three upper levels, with a cafe located in the foyer area.

The building was designed in 1918 by Italian engineer Odoardo Cavagnari and reflects the colonial architectural heritage of the city. A major renovation took place in 1936 to modernize facilities and enhance the architectural elements throughout the structure.

The interior ceiling displays dance-themed paintings by local artist Saverio Fresa that blend Art Nouveau style with classical architectural elements. Visitors who look up during performances or when exploring the building can appreciate these decorative details.

The theater is easily accessible on foot from the city center and offers comfortable seating across multiple levels to accommodate different preferences. Visitors can explore the building during daytime when available, though attending a performance provides the full experience of the ornate interior.

In 1938, the international Asmara car race started directly in front of the building on Viale Roma, making the plaza a gateway between theatrical performances and sporting events. This convergence of cultural and sporting activities created an unusual dual purpose for the space.
