Asmara Cinema-Teatro, Opera house and theater in Asmara, Eritrea
The Asmara Cinema-Teatro features a monumental staircase entrance, shell-shaped fountain, and Renaissance-style loggia with Corinthian columns on its exterior.
Italian engineer Odoardo Cavagnari designed this theater in 1918, which underwent renovations in 1936 to modernize its facilities and enhance its architectural elements.
The theater's ceiling displays dance-themed paintings by Saverio Fresa, incorporating Art Nouveau elements within its Romanesque Revival and neoclassical architecture.
The auditorium accommodates 750 spectators across a parquet floor and three additional levels, with a cafe operating in the foyer.
In 1938, the international Asmara circuit car race established its starting point at Viale Roma, directly in front of the theater building.
